Free things to do in Co. Down – Part 3 – A walk along the beach at Murlough Bay, Dundrum just a few miles outside Newcastle, County Down.

Murlough Bay is stunning no matter what time of year you visit.

A hot, sunny day in the summer in Northern Ireland is sure to attract hoards to it’s lovely sandy beaches.

It is an oasis of buckets, spades and deckchairs.

We are lucky in County Down to have some superb, sandy beaches along the East Coast of Ireland including the lovely Cranfield between Rostrevor and Kilkeel.

It is also worth a trip in the winter time if you dare brave the elements. Wrap up well and you will be all set for your adventure.

There is something special about being in the middle of nature at that time of year. It can be raw and gritty but it is truly is something else to be in the middle of nature at it’s most powerful and inspiring.

The colours are stunning, the sounds of the waves crashing onto the Dundrum and Newcastle shoreline are hypnotic.

All under the shadow of the glorious Slieve Donard which rises up to the sky as a backdrop.

This is a sanctuary were nature can do it’s own thing. Many species of birds and wildlife can be found in the nature reserve. Have fun observing nature in it’s own habitat!

After the walk, we headed into Newcastle in search of a good cup of coffee. We stopped off in a lovely little cafe right on the Main Street, Newcastle called Sea Salt.

We can certainly recommend the cappuccino and chocolate brownie in the comfort of the cosy  and relaxed surroundings of Sea Salt in Newcastle after a trek around Murlough.
